Foals 2023

This year, I’ve been fortunate to get to know and photograph not one, not two, but three foals, all of which were born where I keep my horse, Arnie. Which means daily foal cuddles. It’s a hard life, I know…

First up, Mischief

This beautiful little filly is a Welsh Section A. We hoped she might stay dun, but it looks as if she’ll turn grey. She has the funniest little character, is very sassy (there have been a few moments where she’s decided she didn’t want to follow Mum out to the field), and loves a bum scratch. Like mother, like daughter, as her mother loves a bum scratch too. She’s recently started playing with Casper in the field as well, and it is so funny. If I could have as much fun as those foals on a daily basis, I’d be one very happy person!

Casper and Woody

Next to be born were Casper and Woody. Casper was born first, and Woody followed a few days later. Casper is the little bay colt and is a little more shy than the other two. That said, he’s slowly starting to think that he quite likes humans, especially when we bring him food! Being a little more shy though, made him a bit easier to photograph, as I could sit a fair distance away, just watch, and take the photos as the opportunity arose!

Woody, the chesnut, is the opposite! He LOVES a cuddle and a scratch, although you do have to look out for his teeth, because sometimes he’ll try groom you back a little enthusiastically… Being so inquisitive also made him a little difficult to photograph at times, as guess who wanted to investigate the camera?

A chance to experiment

Having been a professional photographer for nearly 8 years (ok saying that scares me a little) it’s safe to say I’ve developed a style that is distinctly “mine”. But I’ve been wanting to experiment with this recently. Try out some different edits, and ways of photographing. More for my own satisfaction than anything. Photographing these foals provided me just the opportunity to do so. I will admit, I was a little nervous about posting the new edits to begin with, but some friends loved them, so I bit the bullet and posted them. It’s safe to say that they went down a treat and were received far better than I could have hoped! So much so that some might feature in the relaunch of my fine art prints!
