The True Value Of Photography

Photography means different things to different people, and this is one of the reasons why I love it so much.

For me, it is a creative outlet, and a way to interact with people I may not have met before. I love that there is no right or wrong answer (regardless of what some photographers might say), you can just let the creativity take whatever form you want it to. Photography also created a community for me, both during University and more recently too, and for that reason it is invaluable.

For others, it is also a way to treasure loved ones, to treasure memories and remember those no longer with us. The reality is, photography is timeless. By being able to print these memories, it creates a constant reminder of the good times, whilst also reminding us of the lessons we have learnt and it is for this reason that it is so important. To so many people.

In this new digital age of camera phones and tablets, we can take photos whenever we wish. Which can be both a godsend, and a curse. Because we are able to take photos whenever we wish to, at just the click of a button, we often forget to do so. And when we do remember, it can sometimes be too late. For example, I used to ride a horse years ago (he could be a complete idiot but I adored him anyway) and I didn’t take nearly enough photos of him. But I have two photos from our first show together, which I will always love, regardless of what I might look like.

But having camera phones can also be a bit of a curse, especially for photographers. Because photography is now so readily available, some have stopped valuing, or recognising the importance that professional photography can have. As they can just take a photo whenever they like. Despite the quality of camera phones, they don’t have the years of experience, and the “eye” for photography that photographers have worked so hard to build. And it’s important to remember that, because whilst phone photos are great for the everyday moments, there is something much more special about having professional photos of your family and loved ones taken. There’s no pressure on you to remember to take the photos, or to get the perfect shot. Instead you can just enjoy the experience and cherish the memories you are creating.

One thing I always like to promote, is that it is never too early to get photographs taken. If the last few years has taught me anything, it is that time passes incredibly quickly, and you really do not know what is around the corner. Believe me when I say you will want photos of your loved ones, whether they’re animals, family members or friends. So if you do anything this year, I urge you, take that photo, book a photo shoot and create some memories that can be treasured forever.

You won’t regret it, I promise.
